Understanding Technology
Stop Commuting Now!
I used to do it too. I got up at 4:30 AM and ran a couple of miles; I ate some
breakfast, prepped for work, and I drove to Atlanta. For one and a half hours plus, I
was in my car, by myself, heading up to Atlanta (or to the Atlanta airport).
I would put in a good, long day's work, and then drive for an additional one and a half hours
back to Carroll County, Georgia.
What are the personal costs of driving your car, on your nickel by the way, to a job
in the Atlanta area?
Hey, let's look at just the current (estimated) gas costs. Let's say that you drive
about 125 miles total each day you drive to Atlanta. That would be about 60 miles each
way, plus another 5 miles for running around once you are up there.
Now let's assume that you drive to and from Atlanta twenty days each month and that
you get 18 miles per gallon from your trusty vehicle. Finally, let's assume gas goes
for $2.90 per gallon.
125 (miles each day) X 20 (days each month) = 2,500 miles per month
2,500 (miles per month) / 18 (miles per gallon) = 138.89 gallons per month
138.89 (gallons per month) X $2.90 (cost per gallon) = $402.78 per month in gas
Stop and think for a minute. You are most likely spending close to $402.78 each month,
just for gasoline, to drive to (and from) your Atlanta workplace.
Hey, I used to do it too!
Now just think about the other costs:
- Auto Services & Repairs
- Busted windshields (rocks from the highways)
- Busted head lamps (rocks from the highways)
- Tires (purchase, rotation & replacement)
Think for a minute about the time you are in your car, away from your family and
not doing any significant work.
3 (hours per day) X 20 (days each month) = 60 hours per month
60 (hours per month) X 12 (months per year) = 720 hours per year
That's right. You are personally spending approximately 720 hours each year away
from you family and accomplishing very little (if any) work.
How stressful is your drive to and from Atlanta? Ever been cut off, ticketed, or
(God forbid) been in a wreck?
How much exercise are you getting by sitting on your bottom while you drive to
and from Atlanta?
I could go on, but I'm not. I'm not going to try to quantify how much pollution you are
personally creating; and I cannot quantify the amount of stress you are putting on your
family as they worry about your safety while you are away from them.
