Carrollton AARP Members Visit Georgia Capitol

ATLANTA - AARP members from the Douglasville and Carrollton area went to the State Capitol today to talk to their representatives and senators about several items before the Legislature.

The AARP members asked their legislators to:

Restore funding for key programs for seniors, including $1.4 million to enable individuals in need of long-term care to remain at home or in the community rather than being admitted to a costly nursing home. The funds would subsidize the cost of 135,000 hours of service to assist caregivers.

Support home mortgage reform by passing SB 57, which would ban prepayment penalties, eliminate broker kickbacks, require lenders to consider a borrower's ability to repay and outline the responsibilities of mortgage brokers.

Support a tax expenditure report by passing SB 206, which would require a regular listing of tax breaks to bring more transparency and accountability into tax decisions.

Support the coordination of transportation services by passing SB 22, which would establish the Georgia Coordinating Committee for Rural and Human Services Transportation of the Governor's Development Council. The committee would be tasked with coordinating transportation services in rural and urban areas to increase efficiency.

Today's visit is part of AARP's annual Three Weeks at the Capitol, when it brings in members from around the state to meet with legislators about current bills and policies.
